Desk accessories

Articles in this category

The small things that decide whether a desk is pleasant to use. Most cost less than a takeaway and fix a problem you have stopped noticing.

Where to start

If you are buying accessories for a desk you already own, work in this order. Each step tends to make the next one obvious.

  1. Get the screen to the right height. A riser or monitor arm. Everything else is cosmetic until this is right.
  2. Get the cables off the floor. A clamp-on tray, then clips along the desk edge for the ones you unplug often.
  3. Cover the surface. A large desk pad protects the top and gives the mouse a consistent surface.
  4. Fix the light. A clamp lamp for the desk, a bias light behind the monitor for evenings.

If your desk moves, an anti-fatigue mat belongs near the top of that list too — it is the most common reason a standing desk stops being used standing.
